The Dart Society Board of Directors has selected 2007 Dart Center Ochberg Fellow Margarita Akhvlediani to become the board's seventh member.
Formerly based in Tbilisi, Georgia, Akhvlediani is the founder and editor-in-chief of the web-based Go Group/Eyewitness Reporting Studio, and past Caucasus Programme director for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in political philosophy at the University of York, in England. Akhvlediani is also a recipient, in 2007, of the Knight Fellowship for Professional Journalists.
"I am an optimist. I believe that the world can be changed for the better,” said Akhvlediani. “I can’t bet that our efforts will definitely put an end to wars and hatred and cure all those hurt. I just know for sure that if we don’t do our best to stop it, it will last forever.”
The board was impressed with Akhvlediani's solid background of international conflict coverage, her knowledge of the Dart Society's strategic plan, her engagement with the Dart community, and her enthusiasm for the society's launch, next year, of its online magazine.
"Margarita Akhvlediani is a journalist of great skill and courage. The Dart Society is honored to have her in our number and to welcome her as a leader," said Scott North, president of the society's board.
