Dart Society featured in Nieman Reports

Last February many in the Dart community gathered at Harvard to participate in the Nieman Aftermath conference. Discussions from the excellent program are featured in the new Nieman Reports, as is an essay by 2005 fellow Mike Walter on reaction to his documentary, "Breaking News, Breaking Down," and insight from 2004 fellow Gary Tippet on navigating the emotional landscape of trauma reporting. The new issue, released today, features commentary from fellows Miles Moffeit, Arnessa Garrett, Paul McEnroe, Donna DeCesare, Seamus Kelters, Loi Grinker, Ruth Teichroeb, Julia Lieblich, Moni Basu, and Scott North; Dart Center Executive Director Bruce Shapiro; Dart Award winner Rachel Dissell; psychologists Elana Newman and Jack Saul; and psychiatrist and author Jonathan Shay.

"Breaking News, Breaking Down" wins Indie Fest award

Mike Walter, a 2005 Dart Center Ochberg Fellow and vice-president of The Dart Society, has won an Award of Merit from The Indie Fest. The award was given for Walter’s landmark documentary, "Breaking News, Breaking Down," which has caught the eye of audiences worldwide with its exceptional tale of how journalists can be emotionally impacted by their work.

"This is an amazing accomplishment, and it really shows what a difference this film is making in relating how journalists can be impacted by the stories they tell," said Walter, who wrote and directed the film. "This is a tremendous honor given the level of competition for this award."

The Indie Fest recognizes film professionals who demonstrate exceptional achievement in craft and creativity, and those who produce standout entertainment or contribute to profound social change. Information about the Indie Fest and a list of recent winners can be found at the Indie Fest website.
